NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra / James Gaffigan

Thu, Jan 23, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, Vadim Gluzman (Violin), James Gaffigan (Conductor)
In his mid-forties, James Gaffigan is already music director of two major opera houses: the Komische Oper in Berlin and the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia. For his debut with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, the American conductor has chosen dramatic incidental music for the programme. Gaffigan opens the concert with the beginning of Modest Mussorgsky’s opera »Khovanshchina«. It is a gloomy portrait of the mores of Tsarist Russia, but the composer gave the introduction the idyllic title »Dawn on the Moskva«: soaring string sounds merge into gentle flute tones, which are gradually joined by other wind instruments.

Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, NDR Vokalensemble, MDR-Rundfunkchor, Alan Gilbert (Conductor)
»Elbphilharmonie Visions« enters its second round with musical fireworks: under the baton of chief conductor and festival initiator Alan Gilbert, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra performs the new work »World Builder, Creature« by young British high-flyer Alex Paxton. »I want to make music that makes me feel most alive when I’m writing it and when I’m listening to it,« explains the 33-year-old. The result: an unmistakable blend of video game soundtracks, virtuoso chamber music and jazz improvisation, which was honoured with the Claussen Simon Composition Prize.

NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra / Frank Peter Zimmermann / Andris Poga

Thu, Feb 27, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, Frank Peter Zimmermann (Violin), Andris Poga (Conductor)
»If you want to know who I consider to be the most important living composer, I say without hesitation: Elgar... I put him on the same level as my idols Beethoven and Brahms.« This is how the violin virtuoso Fritz Kreisler enthused about Edward Elgar in 1905 – and added a personal request: »I wish Elgar would compose something for the violin.« The flattered man was happy to fulfil this wish. Albeit with a few years’ delay. Edward Elgar completed his violin concerto in 1910. The piece was tailor-made for Fritz Kreisler: Elgar placed an extremely demanding solo part in his hands. The sheer abundance of virtuosic cascades and furiously fast arpeggios are such a great challenge that many soloists avoid them. Frank Peter Zimmermann, on the other hand, has taken it on several times and performed the fifty-minute mammoth work with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, for example. In February 2025, he will join the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra to savour the rapturous glow and late Romantic colours of the concerto under the direction of Andris Poga.

Thu, Mar 27, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, Emanuel Ax (Piano), Alan Gilbert (Conductor)
Since Alan Gilbert has been chief conductor of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, the American grand seigneur of the keyboard Emanuel Ax has returned to Hamburg with regularity. Together, the two take on one of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s most famous piano concertos: the one in D minor, K. 466. Its dark key and correspondingly dramatic gesture alone make it stand out from the composer’s piano concertos, which are usually in major keys – this is the Mozart of »Don Giovanni« and the Requiem! But the central island of tranquillity of the »Romance« with its catchy melody also enjoyed great popularity early on.

NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra / Steven Isserlis / Elim Chan

Thu, Apr 3, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, Steven Isserlis (Cello), Elim Chan (Conductor)
»I want interaction. I want people to feel something. I want them to ask questions,« explained Elim Chan in an interview. The Hong Kong-born conductor is currently one of the most sought-after musicians of her generation. The Vienna Musikverein dedicated a three-part portrait series to her in the 2022/23 season. And after Elim Chan’s debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2022, the press wrote euphorically of a »miracle of control and understanding«. In this concert, Elim Chan has a musician at her side who is one of only two living cellists to have been inducted into the Gramophone Hall of Fame and who continues to captivate audiences with his unique musicianship: Steven Isserlis. He plays Joseph Haydn’s long-lost Cello Concerto in C major, in which late Baroque solemnity is combined with the virtuosity of Viennese Classicism. The elegant lightness of the concerto conceals highly demanding passages that require a great deal of dexterity from the soloist.

Fri, Apr 25, 2025, 20:00

NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, NDR Vokalensemble, Stefan Geiger (Conductor)
Put down the gaming console, get off the couch – and into the Elbphilharmonie! On this evening, the hits that make the hearts of all gamers and science fiction fans beat faster are on the programme: music from »Fortnite«, »Starfield«, »Clash of Clans« and »Chrono Cross« as well as from »Star Trek«, »Star Wars«, »Interstellar« and »The Matrix«. And all performed live by real people from the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in the galactically spectacular hall of the Elbphilharmonie! It’s not only a feast for the ears, but also for the eyes. The composers and arrangers were happy to use the full range of the high-gloss orchestral sound to depict the most daring fantasy worlds – the creation of which can be best observed at the Elbphilharmonie.

Is it just a cliché to assume that French music is particularly sophisticated? Or is there more than just a grain of truth in it? An exciting question. Alan Gilbert and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra explore this question when they take a trip to France with Leif Ove Andsnes as part of the Hamburg International Music Festival. With three visionary works that rarely find their way into the concert hall and illuminate the festival motto »Future« in a unique way.

Alban Berg: Wozzeck

Fri, May 23, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, NDR Vokalensemble, Hamburger Alsterspatzen, Matthias Goerne (Wozzeck), Michael Weinius (Dram Major), Martin Mitterrutzner (Tenor), Peter Hoare (Captain), Falk Struckmann (Doctor), Christine Goerke (Marie), Stefanie Irányi (Mezzo-Soprano), Isaak Lee (Tenor), Fabian Kuhnen (Bass), Andreas Heinemeyer (Bariton), Dávid Csizmár (Bariton), Alan Gilbert (Conductor), Romain Gilbert (Scenic installation)
As part of the Hamburg International Music Festival, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra devotes itself to an epoch-making opera under the direction of its principal conductor Alan Gilbert: Alban Berg’s »Wozzeck«. With its sensitive and completely honest portrait of a society undermined by militarism and the abysses into which it thrusts people, the opera became one of the greatest achievements of the Weimar Republic – an achievement which continues unabated to this day. In the band of opera stars, who embody the characters in this harrowing drama, one stands out in particular: Matthias Goerne in the title role of a young soldier on the verge of insanity. Started immediately before the outbreak of the First World War, Alban Berg only found the necessary peace to complete his first opera after his military service in the Austrian army. Against the backdrop of the war years, Berg felt all the closer to his protagonist and the opera ultimately became a sounding memorial against militarism and its social impacts. A whole series of productions in opera houses in the German-speaking region soon followed the potentially scandalous Berlin premiere in 1925 – until the piece was banned by the Nazi regime as »degenerate art«. However, this could not stop the global success of this opera.

Not many conductors manage this: to be as much in demand with the Freiburger Barockorchester as with the Bayreuth Festival or the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra; to have the right touch for early music as well as for Romantic and contemporary music, and for concert music as well as for opera. The Spaniard Pablo Heras-Casado is a stylistic all-rounder and presents another »conquest« in his repertoire during his return to the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra: Excerpts from Richard Wagner’s »Götterdämmerung«. In addition, the no less versatile star violist and NDR Artist in Residence 2024/25 Antoine Tamestit performs Sofia Gubaidulina’s Viola Concerto, which has more or less become a »modern classic«.

He is by far the longest-serving active conductor in the world, but Herbert Blomstedt is not interested in such records: rediscovering the scores of the great composers again and again, sharpening the senses for this art and allowing everyone to share in the joy of making music – that’s what counts! Herbert Blomstedt turns 98 years old in July 2025. And since his time as chief conductor of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, he has regularly returned to the podium of the Hamburg ensemble, accompanied by storms of applause from his audiences.
